Welcome to my newest series. The Navy Brat middle grade historical series covers recent history from 1968 through 1984. Which, as it so happens, were the years I traveled from base to base, from Hawaii to Virginia, with my dad, a twenty year Navy man. The characters are fictional, but many of the events are true.
I begin the series with Scorpion Summer, a novel surrounding the loss of the USS Scorpion on Memorial Day of 1968. The Scorpion was the last US submarine lost at sea, and one of two nuclear subs lost, the first being the USS Thresher in 1963. The lost subs reflect the relentless drive of the US and Soviet governments during the Cold War era.
I will continue the series in Pearl City, Hawaii, in 1972 with Pearl Mornings, then move on through the decade to places like Bremerton, Washington, Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Yorktown, Virginia. I may add more. We’ll see. But I hope to give my middle grade readers a taste of the decades their parents and grandparents knew and loved.
Scorpion Summer is currently with my agent and seeking a publishing home. I’ll let you know as soon as it’s available.
